Last night Ryan and I went to dinner and were seated next to two older gentleman. From my assumptions the oldest was the father and the younger his son. The tables were pretty close, so we were able to hear each other's conversations without trying to eavesdrop. I overheard the son ask his dad about some of the food, which I had on my plate. I offered up my opinion, much to Ryan's embarrassment. You see my Dad is much the same way, always talking to strangers and often making new friends because of it. This was super embarrassing for me growing up, but I guess I inherited this trait, although it still doesn't come as easy to me.
Well we started chit chatting throughout our meal and found out both father and son used to be in the Navy. As most of you know my older brother Justin is also in the Navy so the conversation flowed on naturally. The father, Ron is 82 years old and still lives on his own in Rose Park. After the Navy he started his career as an air traffic controller at SLC airport. He also used to be a pilot. His son, Michael lives in Northern Utah right before the Idaho border, I forgot the towns name. Like I mentioned he was also in the Navy, stationed in San Diego. He was apart of recommissioning the ships, I can't tell you what the means exactly, but it sounded neat! Michael drives down twice a month to visit Ron and take him to dinner. It was nice being able to meet someone new and listen to stories about Salt Lake back in the 30's through now. Talking to elderly people is like getting a detailed history lesson. I loved it and I think even Ryan enjoyed it, although on the way home he made fun of me and said that I am turning into my Dad.
But honestly, I don't think there is anything wrong with that and like I said in my blog title, you never know who you are sitting next too and who you will meet just by offering up an opinion about food :)
